BIG THREE
This concept explores the simple power of three dramatically scaled columns that refer to factory chimneys while elevating the sign. These columns could be executed in plate steel with heavy (probably false) rivets, those we might associate with ship building or bridges. A red enamel painted finish, rolled not sprayed.
This sketch also explores the use of an interesting roof system, with repeating barrel vaults. These are manufactured affordably in corrugated, galvanized metal, recalling quonset huts. The trusswork could be exposed to the exterior with glazing, expressing the structure and making it more modern. The benefits of the vaulting and natural light openings to the interior experience would be wonderful. (Though the task of considering the interior is part of Phase 2, the design team is making a big pitch early: Its a big ceiling, making it great will make the interior great; truly transformational for the interior.)
The façade has been broken up into a rhythm that perhaps refers to the loading docks of warehouses. The diagonal X bracing is decorative, and may stand in front of cinderblock or corrugated (painted or unpainted) metal walls.
The design is dramatic and straightforward, but oddly compelling. It is a stylish warehouse, with a friendly feel. Again it is intended to convey a balance of mixed messages.
