GRAPHIC PANEL SCREEN
The concept used in the interior to support graphic way-finding panels (the Wall Grids) has been extended to the exterior. Depicted in previous renderings as a roofed canopy structure, this version simplifies the concept to a single, freestanding screen element.
The intent is to keep any added elements to the exterior on a bold, graphic level, more in scale with the red box and the very plain white façade. (Note also that the light sconces and stripe have been removed from the existing façade to simplify and modernize the exterior.)
The sign has been mounted to the top of the roof edge to distance the remodel from the existing signage location and format. This frees up the red box to assume a new, clean sculptural identity. Options for how improved a finish can be afforded for the red box, may be determined by the cost of the other elements.
Designers comments:
This entry concept is derived from a previous proposal which superimposed a grid of huge graphic panels over the red box. There were cost considerations and concern that that concepts graphic panels would be considered "signage" and potentially be prohibited in certain communities that limit signage square footage. The same concern may apply to photo blow-ups applied to a screen or to the roofed canopy of a recent proposal. This graphic panel grid raises other concerns for the Designers who feel that the concept of Big Product Photo Blow-Ups is overused in retail design and no longer feels modern or captures customer attention. If the panels become neutral patterns, rather than images, then the form of the screen and the scale of their pattern becomes a concern. Concepts offered below attempt to address this problem in more bold and successful ways.
In the Designers opinion, this concept is judged to be too subtle to achieve the intended impact on customers, failing to "transform" the façade and therefore the Circuit City image. For these reasons this is our least favorite design proposal.
