SILVER LINING
This concept uses a series of horizontally mounted stainless steel tubing with graduated spacing (more dense at the bottom and opening up as it rises). The screen of tubing announces the new entry and reinforces that destination by providing a backdrop for the relocated sign mounted to it.
This new form, in combination with the existing architecture, creates a sleek, futuristic focal element which is appropriately scaled to the red box.
Relocating the sign onto the screen allows the red box to assume a new identity as an independent icon. Hopefully the existing box is refreshed, either with new metallic red paint, an applied vinyl or painted graphic pattern, or high-tech tinted stainless red metal siding.
The freestanding screen created by the tubing also serves to create interesting shadow play against the façade during the daytime. The concept would be enhanced by the attachment of feature lighting to the back of the vertical supporting poles that would wash the white façade with colored, programmable lighting. The inclusion of theatrical, "latest technology" lighting to the identity of Circuit Citys remodel would be a significant contribution to supporting the marketing of the store.
(If the stainless tubing isnt affordable, there are new, specialized coatings that provide a very convincing silver metallic finish. LuminOre (760 634-5474) is one manufacturer of this type of coating. Alternate
finish solutions include using a metallic blue/green finish to the tubing to achieve a greater contrast and play off of the red box and white façade backdrop.)
Designers Comments:
We see strong points to this concept. We like the sleek, modern screen which contributes significantly to animating the existing dull façade. We like the notion of moving the sign off the box as a way of making a dramatic change to the exteriors of Circuit City.
